She is The Key. In the ancient Turkish city of Ruin, American journalist Liv Adamsen lies in an isolation ward staring at walls as blank as her memory. She knows she entered the monumental Citadel at the heart of Ruin but can remember only darkness.

But the key to what? For the brotherhood in the Citadel — now cursed by a terrible plague — her return is the only way to ensure their survival. And for a powerful faction in Rome, she threatens the very future of the Catholic Church.

Hunted across continents and caught up in events that defy explanation, Liv turns to the only person she trusts — a charity worker named Gabriel Mann. Together their paths lead to a shocking discovery — one that will tear them apart and change the world forever… Al-Hillah, Babil Province, Central Iraq The desert warrior stared through the sand-scoured window, goggles hiding his eyes, his keffiyeh masking the rest of his face.

Everything out there was bleached the colour of bone: the buildings, the rubble — even the people. He watched a man shuffle along the far side of the street, his own keffiyeh swathed against the dust.

Even so, they needed to be quick. From somewhere behind him in the depths of the building came a dull thud and a muffled groan. He watched for any indication the stranger may have heard, but he kept walking, sticking close to the sliver of shade provided by a wall pockmarked by automatic weapon fire and grenade blasts.

He watched until the man had melted away in the heat-haze, then turned his attention back to the room. The office was part of a garage on the outskirts of the city. It smelled of oil and sweat and cheap cigarettes.

The forbidden Citadel at the heart of the ancient Turkish city of Ruin opens its gates for the first time in history. Why now, after centuries of secrecy? A deadly disease has erupted within, and threatens to spread beyond its walls. Infected charity worker Gabriel Mann may hold the cure — but can one dying man stop an epidemic?

Without him, former journalist Liv Adamsen is vulnerable, surrounded by strangers in the desert oasis that is her new home.

Liv, however, has far bigger concerns than just her own life…. Is it a vanishing act, an abduction, or something darker? For them all, this much is clear: Something that will change everything. But will it be a new beginning or the End of Days? A figure, stripped to the waist and kneeling takes the blade in his right hand and draws it across the skin at the joint of his left arm and shoulder, tracing the scar of a previous cut.

The blade is sharp and the scar opens easily, letting blood run down skin quivering at the bite of the knife. As it suffers, so must I, until all suffering will end.

AFTER THE RISE, COMES THE FALL

The knife continues to cut, drawing fresh blood from old wounds, carving the same pattern he has seen on the bodies of the sacred monks, captured on a camera phone by the same spy after their suffering had finally ended.

It is a ceremony that remained secret and locked in the Citadel at the heart of Ruin for thousands upon thousands of years.

The enemies of the Church believe that the death of the Sancti and the breaching of the Citadel mark the end of the old ways. PDF downloads: Click the Download button to view the file, or right-click the button and choose 'Save link as…' or 'Save target as…' to download the pdf.
